Common Scams to Avoid
At Vienna International Airport, some taxi drivers stationed just outside arrivals quote a flat "airport fee" on top of the metered fare, claiming it is an official surcharge. Insist on using the meter or pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer through the official taxi desk inside the terminal.
Currency-exchange kiosks in the arrivals hall advertise "0 % commission" but bury a poor exchange rate in the fine print, leaving travelers with significantly fewer euros than at banks or ATMs. Compare the displayed rate against the mid-market rate on your phone or simply use an airport ATM from a major Austrian bank.
Private car services not licensed for airport runs sometimes tout rides inside the baggage-claim area, offering "VIP" transport at premium prices that far exceed regulated taxi or. Politely decline and inside the terminal and head to the clearly marked taxi rank or pre-booked ride pickup zones outside.
